Fonzie: Evil Genius
Has Fonzie hired Karl Rove as his agent? In addition to expressing his desire to stay with the Nationals long-term, Boswell mentioned in today's WaPo chat that Fonzie said he'd be willing to come back to the Nationals as a free-agent even if he's traded for prospects this month.
That's a level of evil genius thinking that beggars the imagination, even in Washington. BallWonk hopes that Trader Jim and Fonzie get Rove's help in putting the plan into operation. Step 1, agree on a secret five-year contract starting for the 2007 season. Step 2, trade Soriano for as many minor leaguers as you can grab. Step 3, wait for November. Step 4, announce the contract and welcome Fonzie home.
Just thinking about the scheme makes BallWonk giddy.

Either that, or AS just ruined the Nats' ability to trade him. Who will want him for three months, knowing he not only has no plans to stay, but wants to sign back with the team that traded him?
Gotta find a way to keep him at this point.
Excellent point, Justice Hoagie. So this scheme comes down to the question: Do you have more faith in Trader Jim's ability to choose two or three current minor leaguers, or in his ability to choose a single draftee? Not sure what the answer is, but that's the question upon which the trade-him-sign-him plan hinges.

As great as the plan sounds, we'll have to give up a 1st rounder in return. Our first rounder is likely going to be a top-10 pick. Is Soriano worth passing up another Zimmerman? Probably, because Zim was a Halley's Comet type of prospect. But still, you will always wonder if it's worth it to sign a type A free agent, which Soriano will be.
Oh, that certainly is a brilliant plan. Beautiful.
