The Soriano Deal: Trader Jim or Bowda?

Update; The results are in:

soriano-tradegradepoll.gif

A plurality of Nationals fans graded the deal a B, making this a Bowda trade. But the average grade for those not giving an incomplete was a solid C, making this a Trader Jim debacle. Sort of like the Sports page of the Post, where Boswell is all like, "Great deal, man!" but Sheinin was all like, "Dude, that totally blows."

Perhaps tellingly, both Bluegrass and Soriano both effectively told the press, "Wha?" Except for Brad it was more like, "Wha? You mean I get to go hit in that HO-scale ballpark?" and for Alfonso it was more like, "Wha? Don't tell me they're gonna make me play some position where I might not commit more errors than most guys hit home runs."

Sayonara Rick Short -- saw you get your first big league hit; a close-game RBI no less in the midst of a magical June in front of an adoring RFK crowd. One of favorite alltime baseball memories.

You guys still don't get it. If the lease is not passed by the City Council on the 20th, there isn't going to BE a team here after 2006? Why aren't you trying to do something???

You're still talking about trades? Haven't you seen the front page of the Post? Jack Evans e-mailed me earlier today and said right now he didn't have the votes to approve the lease. And that was before THIS story appeared on the front page of the Post:

I hope I am wrong, but I think the stadium is dead, and any hopes of baseball in Washington beyond 2006...

This dumb trade is no surprise to me. Trader Jim always had a weakness for big names. He wrecked the Reds by bringing in a broken down Ken Griffey. What makes me sick is that Pat Gillick wanted the interim GM job, but Selig, in deference to his butt buddy, Weasel Angelos, brought on Trader Jim to keep the Expos/Nats deep in the toilet bowl. This was a dumb, dumb trade.

The bottom line is that this season has been preordained to be miserable for us. New ownership, new front office peeps, new coaches, and a new manager will give us a "Washington Foundation" to build upon. We need core Red...er Nationals' to build a team around! Soriano sounds like another Guillen-like diva.
